PPI Claims, How Far Back Can You Go?
PPI claims have been fairly widespread over the past few years, since the extent of the mis-selling of PPI became apparent. But what if you are only just finding out about the whole thing but your policy has already ended? Can you still make a claim?
Well, as a guide, the following should apply (though if you are not sure, it’s worth seeking professional advice for your specific situation):
- If your policy started within the last six years, whether you are still using it or not, you should be able to reclaim if the policy was mis-sold. Furthermore, if you do not have the original paperwork anymore, your lender, by law, should still have it and will supply you with a copy on request.
- Even if your policy started more than six years ago, you could still be able to claim if it ended within the last six years or it has not yet ended. In the circumstances, the provider should still have the paperwork associated with it.
- If your policy ended more than six years ago but you still have the paperwork, you may be able to claim. However, your chances may be reduced given that much of the success depends on what you would be able to remember about the sale itself.
- If your policy ended more than six years ago and you do not have the paperwork, you are unlikely to be able to apply for a reclaim. The reason for this is that your PPI provider will no longer be obliged to have the paperwork on file.
- If you have already made a complaint about the PPI or your provider can prove you were aware of PPI claims a long time before making your claim, your chances of success may be reduced.
Of course, each situation is specific to the individual and if you are not completely sure, seek out professional advice before proceeding.
